My name is Annie Young-Bridges, and this is my 33rd year teaching public school orchestra and private violin. I have a Bachelor of Music Education degree from USM in Hattiesburg, and am certified in Instrumental/Vocal music, Middle School English/Language Arts, and Suzuki Violin Teaching. While conducting high school orchestras in North Carolina and Texas my students regularly won sweepstakes awards. I am a professional violinist in the Greater New Orleans Area, and throughout my career have had the pleasure to play in with megastars like Smokey Robinson, Yo Yo Ma, Josh Groban, the Moody Blues, etc.! I am also a yoga teacher and have presented workshops at state and national conferences, and was featured in an article in the December, 2015, "Strings" Magazine. I enjoy playing violin with my friends in classical and Celtic in teaching my students, practicing violin and yoga, and spending time with my husband, grown children, and rescue pets!
Elementary Strings Classes meet for 30 minutes weekly. The lessons are taught in small groups using the Suzuki Violin Method in the early grades, and move toward the traditional reading approach in 2nd and 3rd grades. Parent involvement is key to the Suzuki method, and K, 1st, and 2nd graders must have a parent present in the lesson. Parents of 3rd graders are invited but not required at the lessons. (Parents can even learn to play violin, too!)
TMS has 3 main ensembles of "orchestral stringed instruments" (violin, viola, 'cello or string bass) that meet during the school day in small groups during their grade level enrichment class.
Students in each group perform for the school during the day and the public in the evening twice a year or more. Throughout the school year each group will rehearse after school on selected Thursdays.
Please refer to the calendar on this website for the dates. (Students in the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, a private orchestra ensemble, should attend at least 3 TMS after school rehearsals plus the final rehearsal.)
- Beginning Orchestra -Grades 4-6 have no prior experience on the instrument. Students learn basic playing and reading skills using a traditional method, Essential Elements Interactive.
- Intermediate "Concert" Orchestra - Grades 4th, 5th or 6th - have at least one year of prior experience and read music at a basic level. Students learn more advanced reading and playing skills using Essential Elements Interactive and purchased sheet music.
