Dominick Messina is in his twelfth year as the Director of Bands at Madisonville Junior High School. Since his arrival, the MJHS Band has received Superior ratings at the Parish, District, and State levels. In addition, Mr. Messina was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at MJHS for the 2012-2013 school year. Prior to his arrival at MJHS, Mr. Messina served as the Director of Bands at Mandeville High School, the Assistant Director of Bands at Northshore High School and the Instructor of Trumpet at Southeastern Louisiana University. Mr. Messina received the Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Master of Music Degree in Trumpet Performance from Southeastern Louisiana University. Throughout his years at Southeastern, he was a member of every major instrumental ensemble, including the Faculty Brass Quintet and the Wind Symphony. After a brief time as interim Director of Bands at De La Salle High School, Mr. Messina accepted a graduate assistantship to begin degree work on a Master in Music in Trumpet Performance at The Florida State University. While at Florida State, he performed in the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, and Chamber Winds.
Mr. Messina is a frequent performer and freelance musician throughout the New Orleans area, in classical, jazz, and Broadway venues. He has performed with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, The Temptations review, Harry Connick, Sr., Charmaine Neville, and Bobby Vinton. Also, he has performed for over forty Broadway shows and operas including, The Producers, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, and The King and I.
Mr. Messina has given lectures and clinics at various schools and universities. He has served as a faculty member of Southeastern’s Young Musicians Camp and the Algoma Music Camp in Ontario, Canada. His professional memberships include Louisiana Music Educators Association Music Educators National Conference, and the International Trumpet Guild.
